Full Scale Curved Pavilion (13 Apr 2012)

We spent this weekend cutting our parts and assembling them…

As things scale up, there are noticeable changes… For example, when we were cutting the 1/4 scaled model, we were able to nest numerous parts on one sheet… At full scale however, we were cut down to probably half the number of pieces.. Measuring the thickness of the material is also important as exactness, tolerance, and the ability to be repeated are important in digital fabrication I have found… Along with that exactness comes the uncertainty of the real world too..

Pavilion - Assembly of scaled model (07 Apr 2012)

We spent the days following finalizing our interior with figuring out how we would be integrating it into the pavilion so that intelligence could be built in. We modeled our system onto the structure.

Ruled Surface Interior Test (28 Apr 2012)

Today my partner and I bought our materials to install our ruled and roped surface…

Installed interiors test - we ran out of rope and only got to test this part of the section model. We were please with the potential and had more work to do.. especially when it came to making it into a system…

New Interiors Strategy (24th Apr 2012)

After assembling the full scale section model yesterday, my partner and I saw some things and decided to come up with a new approach, something dynamic and colorful! I thought of the Bridge of Aspirations connecting the Royal Ballet School with the Royal Opera House in London by Wilkinson Eyre Architects.

Digital model of what the new interior would be…

We used OSB to build our section model.. Photos of the parts..

Interiors & Structure (16 Apr 2012)

For the interiors, my partner and I were exploring several concepts and initially thought of a canvas system that would be incorporated into the structure for the design. I decided to test a structural concept for the Pavilion as a start for the strategies we might apply… as the structure was at the heart of almost everything…

Digital Model of Structural concept of Pavilion with horizontals, verticals, and intermediate stiffening members… I used a distance of 8” c/c as a start for the vertical members and 12” for the horizontal members..
